About the museum
Tepotratos is the museum of the Teatro Povero di Monticchiello, the community of Pienza that has staged a self-written drama based on its own life in the square every summer since 1967. The name is an acronym: TEatro POpolare TRAdizionale TOScano (Traditional Popular Theatre of Tuscany).
The museum is not an exhibition of objects, display cases and captions, but a space designed to stir emotions, with a route made up of sounds, voices, fragments of dialogue, objects and images. It is not a museum about the Teatro Povero but a museum of the Teatro Povero: it presents scenes and images of traditional Tuscan popular theatre and pays tribute to peasant and sharecropping society, its entertainments and its folk poetry, with stories of upside-down worlds that often concealed a longing for a fairer and more inclusive society.
The venue is the Granaio, a building from the mid-18th century next to the large medieval church, which is also the historic home of the Teatro Povero. The space also hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts, workshops and performances.
