About the museum
The museum in Cantiano is located in the historic centre, in the restored 13th-century rooms of the former Augustinian convent, with entrance from the cloister of the nearby church of Sant'Agostino. The complex consists of two separate museums, opened at different times and in different ways.
The Museo geo-territoriale, founded in December 2001, relates the geological evolution, the formation of rocks and hills to the activities of the population: from the flaked stones of the Palaeolithic to the bridges of Roman Via Flaminia, from the sandstone portals of noble palaces to the exploitation of quarries. A second section is dedicated to the riches of the territory, starting with the visciolo sour cherry, from which amarena production has continued for centuries, and to fossils, with casts of ammonites from the collection of the geologist Morena from Cantiano.
The Museo archeologico della Via Flaminia Giulio Cesare Corsi, opened in July 2003, follows human presence in the territory from prehistory to the protohistoric and Roman periods, with a milestone dated 305 AD set 140 miles from Rome and a rich medieval section documenting the castrum of Luceolis, the fortified centre of Cantiano and the materials from the Rocca Gabrielli. Most of the finds come from the collection of Giulio Cesare Corsi.
