About the museum
The Museo Archeologico di Prizzi was established in 1999 and opened in 2000 through cooperation between the municipality and the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Palermo. It is on the Corso Umberto I and is divided into three sections: archaeological, palaeontological and mineralogical.
The main core is the archaeological section, devoted to the settlement on the Montagna dei Cavalli, identified with the ancient Hippana, and to its territory. It preserves ceramics, red- and black-figure vessels, terracotta figurines, everyday objects, jewellery, coins and glass and metal finds from the settlement and its necropolises. The structures uncovered by the excavations date mainly to the Greek and early Hellenistic periods (4th–3rd century BC) and include a theatre. Hippana was conquered by the Romans in 258 BC, during the First Punic War, and was later abandoned.
Among the most precious finds are fragments of two diadems in gilded silver on a bronze base from the western necropolis, a red-figure pyxis from the second half of the 4th century BC, and a gilded silver plate with a three-faced head, possibly once fitted to the hilt of a dagger. The coin collection includes coins bearing the letters “IPA” from the mint of Hippana. The palaeontological section presents fossils from various Sicilian deposits, while the mineralogical section holds a collection of minerals from Sardinian mines.
