About the museum
The Permian geo-naturalistic museum of the Sosio is a section of the municipal museum of Palazzo Adriano and is located in the former stables of Palazzo Dara, the town hall, in Piazza Umberto I. It holds casts of Permian fossils, dating back more than 260 million years, found in the territory of the Monti di Palazzo Adriano e Valle del Sosio oriented nature reserve, in particular at the Pietra di Salamone and the Pietra dei Saraceni.
The fossils were discovered in 1887 by Professor Gaetano Giorgio Gemmellaro and revealed the presence of the Permian in Sicily, attracting the interest of many geologists and palaeontologists. The originals are partly held at the Museo Gemmellaro in Palermo.
