About the museum
The Museo civico Real Casina is housed in the former stables of the Bourbon castle of Palazzo Adriano, on the Salita Real Casina. The castle was built in the 14th century as a palace-tower on the site of an earlier farmstead, to protect farming activity and offer shelter to the peasants. In the first decades of the 19th century it was used as a royal residence by Ferdinand IV and the Bourbons. The ruins have been declared a national monument and, according to tourist information, can be visited only from the outside or, for the interior, by appointment.
The museum houses the historical-cultural section devoted to Arbëreshë culture, that of the town's community of Albanian origin. The rooms display enlarged photographs of the 1782 watercolours by Jean-Pierre Houël, which show the women of Palazzo Adriano in traditional Arbëreshë and Sicilian dress, and, in display cases, actual traditional Arbëreshë costumes.
