About the museum
The museum occupies the ground floor of Villa Ciuranà, an 18th-century palazzo of the Palopoli family in the hamlet of Torretta, in Crucoli. The building has three floors and a belvedere (viewing terrace) and retains frescoed ceilings.
The collection, also known as the Museo della Magna Grecia, comprises about 2,000 local finds from various periods, almost all from the Krotoniatide (the territory of Croton). It illustrates human history from protohistory to the Byzantine period, with the uses, rituals and functions of the objects, and devotes a section to the Brettii, the indigenous population that preceded Greek colonisation; a standout item is a clay doll with movable arms and legs.
