About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Santa Severina was opened in 1998 on the initiative of Archbishop Giuseppe Agostino and was curated by Monsignor Giuseppe Misiti. It is housed in the archbishop's palace beside the cathedral, overlooking Piazza Campo, opposite the castle.

The same building also houses the Biblioteca storica diocesana (historic diocesan library) and the Archivio storico diocesano (historic diocesan archive), which together with the museum form a cultural centre unique in Calabria and in southern Italy.

The collections bring together the historical and artistic testimonies of the cathedral and the episcopal palace, from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century: furnishings, liturgical objects, vestments, paintings and sculptures that tell the story of the local Church and, with it, of the town.

The route is divided into thematic sections: the marble finds of the cathedral and of the so-called Baptistery, the goldwork and silverware of the Cathedral Treasury, the section dedicated to the patron saint Sant'Anastasia, and the collections of paintings and sculptures.

Highlights

  • Cathedral Treasury with an Angevin-period cope clasp
  • Silver reliquary arm of Sant'Anastasia
  • Silver statue of Sant'Anastasia from 1792
  • Painting by Fabrizio Santafede
  • Marble finds and a Byzantine capital from the cathedral

Permanent exhibition

  • Collezione permanente del Museo diocesano – Marble finds from the cathedral, Cathedral Treasury, section dedicated to Sant'Anastasia, paintings and sculptures from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century.
