About the museum

The civic collection was founded in 1869 to receive works from suppressed religious buildings, largely paintings dating between the 15th and 18th centuries. In 1895 the Museo Civico in Corso San Giorgio was inaugurated, which also included archaeological finds from ancient Interamnia. The picture gallery is now housed in a neoclassical building erected in 1923 in the gardens of the Villa Comunale, precisely to host the civic museum.

The collections were partly dispersed and damaged during the Second World War and were rearranged from 1979 onwards. After a period of closure, the picture gallery reopened in 2018 with a new layout in chronological order, which presents only part of the works accumulated over more than a century of history.

The route opens with the 15th-century panels by Giacomo da Campli and the Master of the Crivelleschi Polyptychs, continues with the Baroque canvases by Neapolitan and Roman painters and with the paintings and sculptures of 19th-century Abruzzo (Celommi, Pagliaccetti, Averardi), and then with 20th-century artists such as Montauti, Melarangelo and Crocetti. A multimedia guide with stories about personalities of Italian culture accompanies the visit and is complemented by the project “La Pinacoteca si ascolta”, with soundtracks composed for four works.
