About the museum

The museum is housed in a building on Via Melchiorre Delfico, in the block where houses had stood since the 13th century. In 1613 construction of the church of San Carlo began there, to which a convent was attached; in 1742 the complex became an orphanage, and between 1833 and 1842 it was restored and extended. After the institute moved out, in 1878 the building housed the town court: today the San Carlo auditorium is the former courtroom, frescoed by Gennaro della Monica.

When the court moved to a new seat, the palace was restored and converted into a civic museum. The ground floor opened in 1997 and the first floor in 2001. The museum is named after Francesco Savini (1846–1940), a historian and archaeologist from Teramo who devoted his life to the study of the city and its territory, with important discoveries from the Roman and medieval periods.

The ground-floor route tells the story of the city, from protohistoric traces to Roman Interamnia with its public buildings, domus and necropolises, and on to the Middle Ages and the remains of the basilica of Santa Maria Aprutiense. The first floor is devoted to the Ager Praetuttianus, the territory of the Pretuzi, from prehistory to Romanisation, with sections on coins, trade, roads, sanctuaries and rural villas. The second floor is reserved for education and houses a reconstruction of an Iron Age dwelling. After the earthquakes of 2016 the building was declared unsafe and the museum was closed to the public.
