About the museum
The museum is located in the hamlet of San Giuseppe Lavoratore in Controguerra, in a typical rural building. It was founded in 1982 on the initiative of an association of enthusiasts and scholars of popular culture and traditions, with the collaboration of the Centro Servizi Culturali of Nereto. It documents the rural activity of the past, which still underpins the economic development of the Val Vibrata.
The aim is to preserve the historical, environmental and cultural memory of the area by recovering farm objects and tools, as well as the supporting crafts (tailor, carpenter, shoemaker). The shed displays objects from the wheat cycle. The richest and most complete section is the one on hemp, with artefacts and posters on the cultivation and processing of this fibre, which was used for linen, rope and cord. The museum also holds captioned photographs and documents such as sharecropping booklets (libretti colonici) and farm contracts. It is particularly suited to school and youth groups.
