About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Ferretti, a sixteenth-century building in the centre of Ancona, and holds the archaeological evidence of the Marche from prehistory to the Roman period. The Ministry's entry lists a collection of over 100,000 archaeological finds and 90,000 coins.
The best-known sections concern the Picene civilisation and the Galli Senoni, with goldwork and Attic vases; among the most famous objects is the limestone head of the Guerriero di Numana. Since December 2025 the Depositi Aperti (open storerooms) have formed part of the permanent route.
Some sections (the Picene and Celtic rooms and Prehistory) are temporarily closed for display works; a visit to the Prehistory section can be arranged by e-mail with the museum.
