About the museum
The gallery, founded in 1868 and named after the painter from Ancona Francesco Podesti, has been housed since 1973 in the Palazzo Bosdari, in Via Pizzecolli, extended with the Palazzo Bonomini building, which was connected to the first in 2016.
The route traces the art of the Marche from the Middle Ages to the present day. Masterpieces include the Pala Gozzi by Titian, the Madonna with Child by Carlo Crivelli, the Sacra Conversazione and the Pala dell’Alabarda by Lorenzo Lotto, and works by Sebastiano del Piombo, Andrea Lilli, Guercino and by Podesti himself. A section is devoted to the 20th century, with artists such as Bartolini, Bucci, Cagli, Trubbiani and Enzo Cucchi, partly linked to the Premio Marche.
After a closure of about two years for works to upgrade the systems, the museum reopened on 6 December 2025 with a new permanent display of 133 works; over six hundred other works remain in storage.
