About the museum
The Museo della città di Ancona is located in Piazza del Plebiscito, in the building that combines the former hospital of San Tommaso di Canterbury with the 19th-century former fish market. The museum tells the history of the city from prehistory to Italian unification with a mainly educational approach, based on reconstructive models, panels and thematic videos, supported by some archaeological finds, works of art, maps and documents.
Among the best-known pieces are the grave goods of a Hellenistic female burial, the Greek stele of Sopatro with relief and inscription, an ancient model of the Citadel of Ancona by Francesco Paciotto, two paintings by Luigi Vanvitelli showing the Lazzaretto and the Molo Nuovo, and a large model of the city from the first half of the 19th century.
According to the information available, the museum was closed in 2020, during the pandemic, and the city is awaiting its reopening.
