About the museum
The Tarquinia diocesan museum occupies the piano nobile (main floor) of the bishop’s palace on Via Roma and gathers works of sacred art from the many churches and places of worship of the city of towers and churches. The route unfolds through eleven halls and a gallery with portraits of illustrious prelates, which leads into the Tarquinia section of the Archivio storico diocesano (Diocesan Historical Archive).
From the salon one reaches the episcopal chapel and the room that holds the 16th-century panels: the Madonna del Latte or della Neve by Pastura, the Tavola dei Casenghi with Saint Anthony Abbot between Saints Sebastian and Roch, and the Deposition with the Grieving Virgin by Monaldo Trofi, of which the museum also holds the Adoration of the Magi and the Birth of Mary. Also on display are 15th-century bust reliquaries, silverware, vestments, objects of popular devotion, liturgical furnishings, furniture and canvases.
Among the most significant pieces are the panel of the Santissimo Salvatore, from the late 12th century and linked to the ancient August festivities of Corneto, the Madonna di Cibona by Pier Francesco Mola, and the altarpieces painted by Tommaso Conca for the retreat of the selva of San Pantaleo. Banners and furnishings also recall the heritage of the city’s confraternities and guilds, such as the Università dei Calzolai (shoemakers’ guild) with the cult of Saints Crispin and Crispinian.
