About the museum

The museum opened in 1996 in a 19th-century building in the historic centre of Urbisaglia, to present the Roman colony of Urbs Salvia and its territory. The collections derive from excavations begun in the 18th century and from later systematic investigations in the archaeological area at the foot of the village.

On the ground floor was displayed a large Neo-Attic marble krater of the Augustan age with dancing nymphs, recovered in the excavations of the University of Macerata in 2005–2006, together with architectural elements and a room dedicated to the temple of Salus Augusta. The upper floor held portraits, frescoes, theatre sculptures, amphitheatre inscriptions, coins and fragments of the Fasti consolari and triumphales.

Since 2014 the museum has been run by the Ministry of Culture, now through the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Marche. After the damage of the 2016 earthquake the building was declared unsafe; restoration works and a new display are under way.
