About the museum
The Casa Museo Osvaldo Licini stands at the top of the small village of Monte Vidon Corrado, in the Marche, in an 18th-century manor house on three floors where Osvaldo Licini, one of the great artists of 20th-century European art, spent almost his whole life. After his studies in Bologna and Florence, the war, and years between Paris and the Côte d'Azur, at the age of thirty-two he chose to return to the village and make the house an “experimental art laboratory” (laboratorio d'arte sperimentale). He worked here until 1958, when he received the international prize at the Venice Biennale, and he died here a few months later. From 1946 to 1956 he was also mayor of the village.
A careful restoration has consolidated the building and preserved traces of the artist's presence. Furnishings, objects and clothes, largely donated by Caterina Celi Hellström, adopted daughter of his wife Nanny, recreate the domestic setting. Visitors can see the cellar with brick vaults, where Licini prepared his colours; the living area with the room in which he finished and stored his works; the kitchen in a Nordic style; and the sitting room with Swedish furniture and paintings such as the “Ritratto della madre” (Portrait of the Mother, 1921) and the “Paesaggio” (Landscape, 1925).
Climbing the spiral staircase you can admire the wall painting of the 1940s in shades of blue and grey. On the upper floor are the studio, with easels, paints and brushes, and the bedroom in Constructivist style with the Archipittura, the only wall paintings made by Licini. Another room displays works by his wife, the Swedish painter Nanny. The house is run together with the Centro Studi Osvaldo Licini, which is based in the same building, on the corner of the municipal palace.
