About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Cento, a 16th-century noble residence in the centre of Pollenza, in the Marche. The building was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries and is distinguished by its imposing façade and rusticated doorway. It belonged to the Counts Moroni, and before the middle of the 20th century it was bought by Cardinal Fernando Cento. After his death it passed to the Curia and then to the municipality.

The core of the museum comes from the collections of two fellow townsmen, Giuseppe Fammilume and Don Nazzareno Buldorini, who from 1928 searched for, catalogued and preserved objects, papers and documents on the town's history. Further material came through donations from the heirs of Cardinal Cento and from various families.

On the first floor, the rooms house archaeological finds in two groups, both from Montefrancolo: chance finds, including a male marble torso, perhaps of Apollo, and female statues, and materials from excavations of the 1940s, from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. On the ground floor are republican-period floor mosaics, including a fine emblem of a wild boar hunt. The building also houses a picture gallery, ceramics produced in Pollenza between 1810 and 1905, period furniture and a rare collection of crucifixes.
