About the museum

The museum collects materials on the history of satire and caricature, in Italy and around the world. It grew out of the works submitted to the Premio Satira Politica (political satire prize), established in Forte dei Marmi in 1973, which remain the main core of the collection.

The seat is the Forte Lorenese, also known as Forte Leopoldo I or the “fortino” (little fort), an 18th-century construction commissioned by the House of Lorraine for defence and surveillance along the coast. Later the fort served as a store for marble awaiting shipment from the jetty, then was the Casa del Fascio and finally a post office; after a period of inactivity it housed the museum.

The collections include works by Italian and foreign caricaturists and cartoonists, among them Angiolo Tricca, Giovanni Mosca, Walter Molino, Lorenzo Viani, Golia and George Cruikshank. The library holds collections of historical satirical magazines of the 19th and 20th centuries, among them Simplicissimus, Punch, Le Rire, Marc’Aurelio and Il Becco Giallo. According to the sources consulted, the museum is currently not open to the public.
