About the museum
The MAV is a short distance from the excavations of Herculaneum, in a former school building restored under a project begun in 2003, and opened on 8 July 2008; the last room, dedicated to the Schola Armaturarum of Pompeii, opened in December 2010. It is run by the Fondazione C.I.V.E.S.
The museum displays no original finds: over about 5,000 square metres and three levels it offers a virtual and interactive route that takes the visitor back to a moment before the Plinian eruption of AD 79. More than seventy multimedia installations reconstruct the main archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Baia, Stabia and Capri, with 3D reconstructions, projections, multisensory effects, holograms and augmented reality.
Among the spaces are a 360° immersive hall and a 5D multisensory room that recreates the eruption, as well as a gallery for exhibitions and events and an auditorium.
