About the museum
The museum occupies the site of the Bourbon royal works of Pietrarsa, commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1840 as an ironworks. From 1845 steam locomotives were built there, and in 1853 about 700 workers were employed there. After Italian unification the complex went through a difficult phase, marked by the unrest of 1863 put down by the army; the State resumed management in 1877 and, with nationalisation in 1905, the plant passed to the Ferrovie dello Stato as a major repair workshop for steam locomotives.
As electric and diesel traction spread, activity declined, and in 1975 closure was decided, with the site converted into a railway museum. The museum opened on 7 October 1989, closed for a long renovation and reopened on 19 December 2007. It is now run by the Fondazione FS Italiane.
The route spans seven pavilions covering about 36,000 m², of which 14,000 m² are covered. On display are steam and electric locomotives, rolling stock and wagons in reduced scale, models, historic workshop machinery and a naval section. Among the best-known exhibits are the Bayard, a 1939 replica of the locomotive of the Naples–Portici line, the Treno Reale (Royal Train) of eleven carriages built in 1929 for the wedding of Umberto II of Savoy and Maria José of Belgium, and a presidential carriage donated in 1989 by Francesco Cossiga.
