About the museum
The Archivio-Museo Malaspina is housed in the historic Palazzo Malaspina in Mulazzo. It grew out of historical and literary research on the Malaspina family of Mulazzo, begun more than fifty years ago by Dario Manfredi, who over time brought together more than 9,000 books, 600 periodical titles and over 25,000 handwritten documents linked to the family.
The institution preserves the domestic archive of the Malaspina family of Mulazzo and offers a specialised library with volumes from around the world and antiquarian texts devoted to the family, two permanent exhibitions and a display of Malaspina relics. Among the documents of particular interest are those on Annetta Malaspina, Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina and Maria Beatrice d'Este Malaspina.
A substantial part of the museum is dedicated to Alessandro Malaspina (1754–1810), the great navigator of the 18th century, with maps, books, writings and material from the round-the-world expedition of 1789–1794, including drawings and paintings of animals, plants, places and peoples encountered. The cultural, educational and publishing activities focus on the history of navigation and on the relationship between Europe and the Americas.
