About the museum
The diocesan museum is located below the Palazzo Vescovile, on one of the most important squares of Pontremoli, opposite the Duomo. It was inaugurated on 31 January 2009 at the wish of Bishop Eugenio Binini, with the aim of giving new life to the religious and artistic heritage of the churches of the Lunigiana.
Pontremoli was granted the title of noble city by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1778 and separated from the diocese of Luni and Sarzana, becoming an autonomous diocese. The building that once housed the town council then became the seat of the bishop.
The first part of the route is dedicated to the Middle Ages: panels tell of the Christianization of the Lunigiana, with a cast of the Leodegar gravestone, a cast of a statue-stele and a model of the pieve churches along the Via Francigena. At the centre is displayed a cast of a labyrinth, a symbol of the pilgrims' journey, whose original is in the church of San Pietro. The second part presents objects used by the diocese between the 18th and 20th centuries, such as crosses, cartegloria (processional glory frames) and vestments, and the Clothed Madonnas, statues covered in rich fabrics.
