About the museum
The Venerabile Confraternita della Misericordia di Pontremoli dates back, according to a historical prospectus of 1856, to 1262, and is regarded as the third Misericordia founded in Italy. Its roots lie in the Confraternita dei Disciplinati di San Lorenzo, documented from the 15th century and called “della Misericordia” from 1574, after its affiliation with the Roman archconfraternity of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.
Suppressed in 1785 by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, the confraternity was restored in 1791, and in 1805 it affiliated with the Misericordia of Florence, adding to its traditional services first aid to the injured and the transport of the sick to hospital. In 1856 it was refounded by one hundred and forty-seven citizens, and since then it has operated during epidemics and disasters.
The Museo Storico della Confraternita was inaugurated on 2 June 2010 at the premises in Via Pietro Cocchi. The conception and display are credited to the brother Renzo Simoncelli. Among the objects recalled by the website are a horse-drawn litter from 1900, a horse-drawn funeral carriage from the same year, a small carriage, a hand-pulled litter from 1910 and a fire pump.
