About the museum
The museum opened to the public in 1978 in the polygonal tower of the marquis’s castle in Palmoli. It presents the agro-pastoral life of the area through agricultural and craft tools, and documents the fortified architecture of the Vastese area, with reference to the castles that are now abandoned. The route includes full-scale reconstructions of a typical farmhouse and a small section with Roman archaeological finds from the surroundings.
The castle, a symbol of the medieval village, developed around an original tower that sources date to 1095. The complex includes the defensive walls on the south and east sides, the tower, the passetto (a narrow passageway) and the 15th-century marquis’s palace with the attached 18th-century chapel of San Carlo. In 1650 it passed to the Severino family of Naples, who made it their residence. From the top of the tower you can see both the sea and the mountains. The museum is run by the Fondazione Vastese.
