About the museum

The museum is housed in the castle of Monteodorisio, in the province of Chieti, reached from Largo Castello next to the town hall. It was founded by the Comune (municipality) of Monteodorisio. The museum has been open since 1985; the first display was devoted to the history of the town, the later displays date from the late 1990s and 2004, and in 2012 a new archaeological exhibition opened with finds previously kept in the convent of Sant’Antonio in San Buono.

The archaeological section holds material from the Vastese hinterland, from several municipalities in the area: grave goods from various periods, the remains of a mammoth skeleton about 400,000 years old found at Scerni, and the Chiave di Tufillo, a votive key with an Oscan inscription dedicated to the Italic goddess Herentas. Until 2020 the economic section reconstructed the pastoral and agricultural economy of the Vastese area, with tools for processing pulses, vegetables and meat.

A third section, the documentation centre of the Franciscan Order in Abruzzo and Molise, covers the presence of Saint Francis and his followers in the region, with the convents of San Buono, Monteodorisio and Vasto, based on the studies of Father Aniceto Chiappini.
