About the museum
The Museo del maiale is located beneath the ancient castle of Carpineto Sinello, converted into a palace in the seventeenth century, in a village whose earliest written records date back to the twelfth century. The exhibition, spread over three levels in five sections covering about 1,000 square metres, addresses three themes: rural society, the role of culture and traditions in shaping society, and ancient agri-food traditions.
The first level is entirely dedicated to the pig and its role in rural communities. A film shows the care of the animal before slaughter and includes a short lesson on preparing ventricina, mortadella di Campotosto and 'nduja, while photographs of the products are displayed on the walls. The two upper levels hold farm tools, including those used for raising pigs, and some photographs.
The route is inspired by the idea that nothing of the pig is wasted and that something can be learned from every part of it.
