About the museum
The Quadrilatero is the area enclosed by the ancient walls in the historic centre of San Salvo, where in Roman times there was a trading centre linked to traffic with the Balkans. In the Middle Ages the area took its present form with the foundation, towards the end of the 13th century, of the Abbey of Saints Vito and Salvo on a pre-existing late-antique settlement, and with the Benedictine community present in the area from 1173.
Excavations have brought to light Roman and medieval structures, now visible in the two archaeological islands in Piazza San Vitale: the Chiostro (cloister) island, with the remains of the abbey cloister and a Roman domus, and the Mosaico Romano (Roman mosaic) island, with Roman-era walls and a polychrome mosaic with vine tendrils. A Roman underground aqueduct crosses the area and still feeds the fontana vecchia (old fountain).
The park includes the Museo civico Porta della Terra, set up in 2006 above the entrance and devoted to finds from the area, from the Archaic necropolis of via Galilei to the Roman period, and the Museo dell’Abbazia, set up in 2007 in the former primary school, which tells the story of the Benedictine monks between the rivers Trigno and Osento.
