About the museum

The museum holds about 1,500 catalogued specimens, displayed in around ten cases, which document the geological origins of the Valle Brembana in the area between the Ponti di Sedrina and the far edge of the Orobie Alps. The area emerged from the sea floor during the Alpine orogeny and formed through sedimentation between the late Palaeozoic and the early Mesozoic, the period to which the palaeontological finds date.

The palaeontological section includes a collection from the Scythian age, fossils from the Ladinian age and specimens from the Norian period. The rocks of the Brembana area, dating back about 40 million years, are documented without interruption at various sites in the valley, so the museum offers a complete picture both in space and in time. The entomological section, the most complete documentation of the butterflies and moths of the Brembana environment, is also of great interest. Among the most striking attractions is the diorama that reconstructs in three dimensions the Calvi basin, with the Pizzo del Diavolo in the background and some rare examples of fauna from the Orobie Prealps.
