About the museum
The Museo Capitolare was founded in 1912 on the initiative of Monsignor Raffaele Tini, with the aim of gathering and safeguarding works of art from the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the city's other churches. It is housed on the upper level of a 13th-century Benedictine-Cistercian cloister adjoining the cathedral; some paintings and statues come from churches demolished in the second half of the 20th century.
In the 1960s the museum expanded into the north wing of the upper cloister. In 1976 Gaetano Bindi donated one hundred ceramics that had belonged to his father, Vincenzo, forming the core of the ceramics collection; later the Illuminati family gave the museum works by the sculptor Tommaso Illuminati.
The route includes a reconstructed sacristy with cabinets, reliquary busts, illuminated codices, incunabula and liturgical vestments; a picture gallery with polyptychs, panels, canvases and wooden statues from the 14th to the 19th century; the ceramics of the maiolica makers of Castelli, terracottas and sacred silverware. Outside, visitors can see the two levels of the cloister, with a lapidarium, and the Roman cistern of the 3rd century BC, later used as a place of worship and decorated with votive frescoes.
