About the museum

CUMA, the Museo civico della cultura materiale di Montepagano, is in the old village of Montepagano, the oldest part of Roseto degli Abruzzi. The name refers directly to “material culture”: the gestures, objects and knowledge of everyday life connected with homes, workshops, schools and village festivals.

The route is organised around eleven themes, each devoted to an aspect of life in the past: from the room of family memories, with trousseaux, bridal dresses and childhood keepsakes, to the kitchen and parlour of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; from the tools of rural life to traditional crafts; from the old-fashioned school, with coins and documents, to the room of the sacred, and on to the social library, a section on cinema and listening, and a workshop of historical dress and embroidery. In the garden are displayed, among other things, an antique cinema projector, a telephone box from the 1960s, a French organ and a Balista cart.

The visit is supported by a digitised, interactive route, room by room, with information cards, QR codes and narrated content; the digitisation project is funded under the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan) for the digital transition of cultural institutions. A multipurpose hall hosts meetings, workshops and theatre activities.

Single ticket €3. Guided tours are a service for groups and schools; individual visitors can request a guide for a small supplement.
