About the museum
The Museo civico “Luigi Chiavetta” is housed in the former church of the Salvatore (or of San Liberatore), a small oratory at the start of Via Grottone, a short distance from the forecourt of Sant'Agostino. The church already existed in the Middle Ages, was rebuilt in 1788 and restored in 1850. It has a classical-style façade with a central window and two niches holding statues of the Saviour and the Immaculate Conception, while the single-nave interior preserves stuccoes by Zopito Grella.
The museum, set up only a few years ago, displays archaeological finds from the territory of Città Sant'Angelo and a collection of sacred statuettes known as “conocchie” (in dialect “chinocchje”, distaffs), the oldest and most valuable of which come from the town's churches. They were dressed and carried in procession at Christmas, Easter, the Assumption and patronal feasts.
