About the museum
Casa Manno was created through a commitment by the municipality of Alghero and the Fondazione Giuseppe Siotto to commemorate the great Alghero-born historian and politician Giuseppe Manno and to enhance the cultural and historical heritage of the town. After decades of neglect following the bombings of 1943, the remains of Manno's birthplace were demolished between the 1970s and the 1980s. In 2004 the administration bought the site, with the aim of building a museum and a research centre in the oldest part of the town, which dates back to the 12th century.
The museum holds a substantial collection, assembled over many years of research and acquisitions by the Fondazione Siotto: furniture, paintings, sculptures, prints, antiquarian books, correspondence, manuscripts and original documents. The route, with multimedia support, is arranged in eleven rooms, with an area for children and for education. It tells the life and writings of Manno in the period between the late 18th and the 19th century, which was fundamental to the formation of the Italian nation.
A programme of works funded by regional resources (€2.5 million) has been prepared by the municipality to complete the museum and reorganise the display.
