About the museum
The Appiu archaeological area lies on the Chentu Mannas plateau, at the foot of Monte Cuccu, in a position overlooking the sea and the coast between the protected areas of Capo Marargiu and Capo Caccia. The nuraghe has a complex structure, with a covered courtyard reached from the entrance and lit by a small opening at the top, which is thought to have served both for light and for the smoke of the hearths: a solution described as unique among known nuraghi. The central tower, about 15 metres high, preserves two superimposed chambers with tholos roofs. Restoration and consolidation work has brought the courtyard back into view after a collapse.
Around it extends a village of about 200 huts, arranged in clusters around central courtyards; the first excavation campaigns, between 2001 and 2003, uncovered fifteen of them. The recovered materials, including grindstones, whetstones, bronze sickles, spindle whorls and loom weights, date the settlement to the beginning of the Iron Age, between the 10th and 9th centuries BC. The huts probably served as dwellings, storehouses and craft workshops.
Nearby are a single-tower nuraghe, the Punta 'e su Crabile, two small dolmens, a giants' tomb in a cork oak wood and a megalithic enclosure with a megaron temple.
