About the museum
The Museo diocesano d’arte sacra was inaugurated on 30 June 2000 and is housed in the oratory of the Madonna del Rosario, beside the cathedral of Santa Maria, in Piazza Duomo in the historic centre of Alghero. It displays the liturgical treasures of the cathedral and of other historic churches in the town.
The building is the result of several building phases: two round-arched portals in Via Maiorca may date back to the first phase of the historic centre, between the 12th and 14th centuries; in the Aragonese period the room, originally used as a warehouse, was transformed and joined to an adjoining building, with the entrances moved to the present Via Duomo; in the 17th century the Confraternity of the Rosary bought it and rebuilt it as an oratory. The hall is a single space with a barrel vault.
The works, dating from the 14th to the 20th century, are arranged in six sections: silverware, paintings, wooden sculptures, cabinetwork, stones and bronzes. Among the best-known pieces are a Catalan reliquary of the True Cross, the gilded Madonna dei Naviganti, a large 17th-century Saint Michael, an inlaid Baroque tabernacle, a predella from an altarpiece of the Annunciation and a marble Madonna of Mercy. The museum is part of the Musei Alghero system.
