About the museum
The Museo Cassioli in Asciano was set up in 1991 thanks to a bequest of works from the Cassioli family, originally from the town, and was re-displayed in 2007 with numerous works on deposit from the Liceo Artistico “Duccio di Buoninsegna” in Siena. It is the only museum in the province devoted entirely to 19th-century Sienese painting.
The first section presents sketches and finished works by leading figures of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Siena, which was directed by Luigi Mussini from 1851 to 1888, such as Angelo Visconti, Cesare Maccari and Pietro Aldi. Mussini championed the purist aesthetic against realism and wanted to revive a recognisable “Sienese school” inspired by the Renaissance workshops.
The second section traces the work of Amos Cassioli, who was active in Florence, author of the large frescoes of the Sala del Risorgimento in the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, and also known as a portraitist. It displays works by his son Giuseppe, a painter, architect and sculptor, including the sketch for the Olympic medal with which he won the IOC competition in 1927, a design used for the Olympic Games from Amsterdam 1928 to Sydney 2000.
