About the museum

The Campo Muri park lies in Rapolano Terme, next to the San Giovanni thermal baths, and combines thermal water, travertine deposits and Etruscan and Roman archaeological remains. The site was originally a travertine quarry: in 1973 quarry workers began to find squared blocks, coins and small statues.

Excavations have uncovered the remains of an Etruscan-Roman thermal complex, frequented from the 3rd century BC and dedicated to the cult of the thermal waters. Among the most striking structures is the so-called Buca delle Fate, a votive pit. The Roman complex is one of the few ancient baths accessible in southern Tuscany.

After the baths were abandoned, the thermal water continued to deposit limestone, so that archaeological and geological layers became intermixed. Finds from the site are now displayed at the Museo di Palazzo Corboli in Asciano. The park can be reached on foot from the historic centre of Rapolano, passing the Romanesque pieve of San Vittore.
