Museum in a thirteenth-century grancia at Serre di Rapolano on the fortified farms of the Santa Maria della Scala hospital and on olive oil production.
The exhibition presents Pier Paolo Pasolini as a painter and draughtsman, with portraits, landscapes and images of rural life, alongside drawings linked to his films and screenings.
About the museum
The museum is housed in the Grancia di Serre, in Serre di Rapolano, and tells the story of the grance (fortified farms) which from the fourteenth century belonged to the Sienese hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. The grance were used to manage the land left to the hospital by the faithful and to store the harvest before it was transported to Siena, where it was used for charitable purposes.
The Grancia di Serre dates back to the thirteenth century and was an agricultural production centre able to supply part of the food for the hospital. The complex included granaries, wine-vat rooms, cellars, oil mills and the spaces needed to process and store grain, wine and oil.
The museum offers two routes. The first illustrates the history and functions of the grancia with panels and multimedia stations, and explains the grance system, with the organisation of the farms, the roads and the roles of those who worked there. The second is dedicated to the olive tree and the production of oil, and is set up in the spaces and with the machinery of an ancient oil mill. The complex also has an olioteca (oil tasting room), where the oils of the main Sienese oil mills can be tasted and bought. The museum is part of the network of the Fondazione Musei Senesi.
