About the museum

The Museo C.E.R.A. (Centro di Educazione Rurale e Ambientale, Centre for Rural and Environmental Education) is located about four kilometres from Rapone, in a small isolated building in the countryside, and opened in 2016. The name plays on the expression “c’era una volta” (“once upon a time”).

The aim is to preserve the folklore, traditional crafts, religious rites and superstitions of rural life in Rapone and Lucania. The route is multimedia and interactive. In the sections on fairy tales, visitors can try to steal the hat of the Scazzamauriedd, a mischievous sprite, look for traces of the Lup Cumunal, the werewolf, or recognise herbs by their smell, as the Masciare, the witches of popular tales, did. Some videos gather testimonies from the village's elderly residents about daily life: making pasta, working wicker, field work and the days spent between church, school and market.
