About the museum
The museum is named after the archaeologist Antonino Di Vita and collects material from excavations and surveys carried out in the area of Licodia Eubea and nearby areas. Some of the finds come from research in the 19th and 20th centuries, including that begun by Paolo Orsi; others emerged from later campaigns carried out with the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) and local associations, including in the 1980s and 1990s.
The display follows a chronological and thematic order and documents continuous human presence from the Neolithic to the Classical period, beginning in the second half of the 5th millennium BC. The route presents the first phases of settlement, the Archaic village and the Hellenised indigenous centre between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, with locally made ceramics alongside imported Greek material. The central theme is the “facies di Licodia Eubea”, a ceramic production that combines indigenous and Greek elements. A recent display case also holds finds from the Islamic period from cave excavations.
The museum is part of the Rete dei musei comunali della Sicilia promoted by ANCI Sicilia and organises educational activities, meetings and cultural events.
