About the museum

The castle was built as a defensive structure by Filippo I d’Acaja between 1324 and 1332 and was later transformed by the Savoys into a noble residence. The four square towers at the corners make it the symbol of Fossano, visible even from afar.

Over the centuries it hosted illustrious figures, including Bona di Savoia and Madama Cristina di Francia, and in 1562 Emanuele Filiberto signed the Treaty of Fossano there. Between 1686 and 1687 it was used as a prison for the Waldensians, and later it served as a barracks and a prison.

Today the Biblioteca civica, with more than 150,000 volumes, is housed in the 16th-century loggias. The guided tour takes in the Sala delle Grottesche and the panoramic tower, from which there is a view of Monviso.
