About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Fossano opened in October 2004 in the ground-floor rooms of the former seminary, an 18th-century building erected between 1771 and 1777. The idea of collecting and restoring the sacred art of the area goes back to the 1970s; the first core consisted of the surviving furnishings of the Confraternita del Gonfalone (Gonfalone confraternity), brought to the cathedral in 1965.
The rooms show paintings, wooden sculptures, silverwork and vestments from the 16th to the 20th century, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, coming from the Cathedral of San Giovenale and from churches and confraternities in Fossano and the surrounding area. The display is arranged by provenance: among the works are nine paintings with the Stories of Joseph, five canvases by Sebastiano Taricco, a monstrance of 1702 and the processional cases linked to the rites of Holy Week.
The museum is currently closed and being rearranged; no reopening date has been given.
