About the museum
The museum is housed in the cassero (inner keep) of the Larciano castle, an ancient fortification built between the 11th and 12th centuries. The walls enclosed the church and other buildings and offered shelter to the inhabitants of the surrounding area; the complex includes a palace with a tower and a keep, the last refuge in case the defences surrendered. From the tower the whole territory can be overlooked; in the past it was used to watch movements and communicate with the other hilltop fortifications.
Since 1975 the cassero has housed the Museo civico, devoted to archaeological finds of local origin. The collection includes materials from prehistory to the Late Renaissance, among them kitchen wares, metal objects, polychrome maiolica, bricks, fragments of paving and cremation burials.
The route also includes an educational section with everyday objects, useful for reconstructing life in the past. Schools and organised groups can book visits on weekdays through the municipality’s Culture Office.
