About the museum
The Culter museum, opened on 14 May 2011, is in Pattada, a Sardinian town famous for centuries for knife-making, a tradition that recent archaeological research traces back to the Bronze Age. The opening was preceded by a presentation of the project, entitled “Cultura e Culto del Metallo”, in the town council chamber.
The route compares ancient and modern knives and is presented as the first permanent exhibition of its kind in Italy. An international section brings together pieces by craftspeople from Sardinia, the rest of Italy and abroad, from Europe to the Americas, Asia, Africa and New Zealand; the historical section traces the evolution of the blade, with examples from Pattada and Sardinia and tools of agricultural and pastoral work. One area is devoted to the knives of the Giagu family.
The museum also includes an artisan workshop with production and display spaces, where the stages of hand-making knives can be watched, using traditional methods and materials. It also has an educational role and documents iron objects and the workplaces of knife-makers from the Neolithic to the present day.
