About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art is the youngest of the diocesan museums in Sardinia (decree of 26 November 2012). It is housed in the premises of the old Tridentine seminary of Ozieri, founded in 1807 by the first bishop of the diocese of Bisarcio. The building dates from the late 16th century and in 1690 was donated by the Borgia family, feudal lords of Monte Acuto, to found the Jesuit college and the first public schools. After the order was suppressed in 1773 it passed to the Sardinian-Piedmontese government and was returned to the diocese in 1807.
The museum is a memorial to the extinct dioceses of Castro and Bisarcio: through the objects on display, the route tells the centuries-old journey of faith of the diocesan community. It is divided into eight thematic areas: history, vestments, statuary, prayer, rites, precious objects, processions and the picture gallery.
Among the most important works are the 15th-century processional cross of Ozieri cathedral, from the former cathedral of Sant’Antioco in Bisarcio; the 16th-century Crown of the Assumption, donated to the cathedral by the Poor Clares in 1889; and St George on horseback slaying the dragon, a 16th-century wooden sculpture in gold estofado. The picture gallery deserves particular attention: it brings together in a single room the largest number of paintings by the Master of Ozieri, a name given since 1939 to a mysterious Sardinian artist of the 16th century.
