About the museum
The Museo Civico Archeologico di Pegognaga holds material discovered in the 19th century in the archaeological area of San Lorenzo, near the pieve (parish church) of the same name. The main nucleus is the collection donated in the 1990s by the Bonatti Nizzoli family, made up largely of Roman finds dating between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. The museum is located in the Centro Culturale Livia Bottardi Milani.
The best-known piece is a Tuscan-order capital of the late 1st century BC bearing the inscription PADO PATRI, evidence of a cult dedicated to the Po, which in Roman times flowed past the site. The small settlement that grew up on the riverbanks, a kind of river emporium halfway between Brixellum and Hostilia, prospered thanks to trade, documented by amphorae, ceramics and glass.
Many of the items on display belonged to household equipment: pottery and metal tableware, glass and bone objects. Building materials and stone furnishings indicate the presence of dwellings of a certain standing, while the display cases show the tools used by the Romans in their everyday activities. Research in the area, carried out since the 1970s by the local archaeological group and the Soprintendenza, has confirmed the existence of residential, commercial and productive structures.
