About the museum
The museum is named after Giuseppe Gorni (1894–1975), sculptor and artist from Nuvolato, a hamlet of Quistello. It is housed in the former primary school “Giovanni Pascoli”, which Gorni himself designed and built between 1929 and 1930 for the growing population of the village, decorating it with exposed brickwork, gutter brackets in the shape of flowers and a wrought-iron relief of children doing their homework above the entrance. The school closed in 1995 because of falling enrolment.
The building was renovated in 2002 to house the artist’s many works. The museum guides visitors through Gorni’s artistic path and private life, telling of rural life in the Lower Po Valley, portraits and family ties, female figures linked to fertility, the memory of war and captivity, and the natural world, with mulberry trees, pumpkins and animals.
On the first floor there are a small number of oil paintings and sculptures in Po clay; on the second floor drawings, prints and sketches are on display, including the cycle of ten prints “Le Georgiche” (The Georgics) and drawings from captivity. The museum is “diffuso” (dispersed) because the route extends to the village of Nuvolato, where the artist’s wall works can be seen, next to the Chiesa Matildica (Matildic church) and other places. Visits are run by volunteers of the association Amici del Museo Giuseppe Gorni.
