About the museum
The museum opened in 2004 and is named after Monsignor Guerrino Ferraresi, a priest and local historian who, together with the honorary inspector Raffaele Benea, helped identify important sites such as the Fornace Grandi and the Chiesuol dei Mosti between the 1950s and 1980s. It is housed in Casa Ariosto, a building in Stellata linked to Virginio Ariosto, son of the poet Ludovico Ariosto, who held its usufruct in 1548. In the twentieth century the house passed to the Comune di Bondeno.
Four rooms on the piano nobile (main floor) trace the history of the area in chronological order: prehistory and protohistory, from the Neolithic site to the terramara of Pilastri, a Bronze Age village; Villanovan and Etruscan material, with the necropolis of Chiesuol dei Mosti; the Roman period, with the stele and grave goods of the legionary Tito Giulio Urbano from Settepolesini; and finally Roman, medieval and Renaissance finds, including those from the 1928 excavations at Stellata.
The attic houses a teaching workshop and a space for temporary exhibitions. The Settepolesini palaeontological site, discovered in 1997, has yielded more than 400 remains of large Ice Age mammals, including mammoth and woolly rhinoceros.
