About the museum
In the 1950s Professor Ivan Tardivello began collecting a large number of objects, photographs and documents, which in 1968 formed the “Raccolta civica” (civic collection), displayed in some rooms of the town hall of Badia Polesine. The collection, meanwhile enlarged, was moved several times, and on 12 June 1977 it found its permanent home in the municipal building of the former Monte di Pietà, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
The museum is named after Antonio Eugenio Baruffaldi and is organised in thirteen sections illustrating different periods of history, from Italian unification to the Second World War, with attention to people's lives, passions and sufferings. A small room is devoted to the oldest history of the area and holds prehistoric, Roman and medieval finds, including material recovered through surface surveys at the Le Giare site in Salvaterra.
The museum also has a library, an archive and a photographic archive. The building is now undergoing restoration: the museum is closed and, according to the local press, the palace should in future also host the Collezione Balzan.
