About the museum
The museum is a memorial centre dedicated to the events of the Second World War in the areas along the Po. It is housed in the Palazzo Cavriani in Felonica, an 18th-century building, and is a civic museum recognised by Regione Lombardia and included in the Sistema museale mantovano (Mantua museum system). The director and curator is Simone Guidorzi.
Felonica played an important role in April 1945, during the Allied spring offensive: the village lay in a central position with regard to the crossing of the river by the retreating German forces and the arrival of the Anglo-American troops, in the sector linking the US 5th Army and the British 8th Army.
The exhibition covers about 1,000 square metres across twelve themed rooms and brings together films, photographs, documents and original artefacts, from the first air raids of 1944 to April 1945. The themes include the Anglo-American bombings, the figure known as “Pippo”, the Organizzazione Todt, the German ferries on the Po, the German crossing of the river, the Herring No. 1 airdrop operation, the Allied advance and the military divisions that fought in the area. Since 22 April 2023 a section has been dedicated to the aircraft that crashed in the period 1943–45 in Emilia-Romagna and the Polesine.
