About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico di Castelnovo Bariano, housed in the hamlet of San Pietro Polesine, consists of three display rooms and holds mainly Bronze Age finds from the area of the Tartaro, the spring-fed river that gathers the waters of the Valli Grandi Veronesi and carries them to the sea.
The route follows the chronological phases of the sites: the Early Bronze Age of Canàr, a pile-dwelling settlement on a low peat bog between the Adige to the north and the Po to the south; the Middle Bronze Age of Canova; and the Final Bronze Age of Marola. From the Canàr settlement mainly pottery fragments survive, from many vessel forms such as large containers, cooking pots, bowls, cups and jugs, as well as loom weights, spindle whorls, incense burners, “tavolette enigmatiche” (enigmatic tablets), and horn and bone objects, including pins, needles and spatulas.
This substantial prehistoric collection is complemented by some Roman finds from Mondonuovo and Stanghelle. The last section of the museum is devoted to Renaissance pottery found at the locality of Torretta. The museum also makes a library with documents on local history and archaeology available to scholars.
